I thought it'd be a good idea to keep track of the local or independent musicians I'm in love with at the moment. Esp since I try to find a new one every week or two. But I have to start out with the old favorites.
First of all Patty Griffin is amazing. The most bluesy, soulful singer that can sound incredible on her first cd Living with Ghosts with just her and a guitar or on her rock cd Flaming Red. In fact I've dared people that have listened to her to name another woman that can go from folky to rock so well and haven't gotten a response yet!
My 2 philidelphia favorites are Nancy Falkow and Dierdre Flint. Nancy has easily one of the most georgeous voices ever and she was a lilith fair finalist for philly. She's also multi-musically talented mostly playing acoustic guitar but also playing bass live. Deirdre is the most hilarious folky singer I've ever heard. She writes songs about bridesmaid dresses and boob fairies that will have you laughing out loud. Both can be found at self-titled websites and soon on acousticgrrl.com!
Finally local to DC is ViceVersa. They end up opening for a lot of bigger grrl and guitar groups that come through. They had a great show at the Takoma Park Folk Festival where I first saw them. They could be the next indigo girls or ani difranco. Kinda a mix inbetween. The most amazing harmonies of the indigo girls but some of the technical talent of ani difranco. they can be found on mp3.com as can deirdre and nancy. Take a listen to them!
