One mo' link for July!
WOW! Thanks to the many Dig Deep members that helped Holly meet her goal to finish her 3 records. If you did some more reading on her page, she's off her meds and has already begun to lose her voice again, so sad, but thank you so much for helping her realize this amazing dream.
I figured since it was SO early in the month I'd send one last link, and then I swear I'm taking a break from Dig Deep!
Margit's Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls fundraising link
My friend Margit has been working with Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls.
Here's a bit about it and a message from Margit below:
Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls is a non-profit music and mentoring program that empowers girls and women through music education and activities that foster self-respect, leadership skills, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration.
The organization brings together girls and women from diverse communities and encourages them to explore self-expression through music, hone their critical thinking skills, build meaningful alliances with other girls and women, develop confidence in making healthy choices in their lives, and effect positive change in their communities and in the world. Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls operates a summer day camp, after school programs, and community events in New York City.
A message from Margit:
Howdy!
Welcome to my fundraising page for Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls! As
many of you know, I have been volunteering for Willie Mae Rock Camp since 2009. This organization is incredibly important to me. The program has changed the lives of so so many girls and women - from campers to volunteers - over the past five years.
In this, our 5th Anniversary year, we are making a special effort to raise money for the financial aid fund by hosting a Volunteer-a-thon! Sponsor a volunteer for as little as 1 hour or up to 60 hours of the time they spend at camp each week.
Please sponsor me for some of the time I spend at camp this summer, and help us get more girls to camp!

July Pick
Hello all!
This installment is a long one, so thanks for reading it.
We are celebrating 1 year of Dig Deep [A Charity Experiment] this month and I just want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for each and every donation you've made. I hope I have enlightened you with small and worthwhile charities that have been chosen. I hope you feel like you were part of something that did some good work in this world.
After this month, I will be taking a break from the experiment, but will continue to post links to charities on the Facebook portal, and hope you will continue to check in, and donate to whomever you choose.
Thank you for taking part and helping so many people around the world.
JULY PICK
This month's pick is a cool one, as we can help produce 3 records by the singer-songwriter Holly Figueroa O'Reilly. (Let me just say, this is not an official charity or a tax deductible one.) I met her about 12 years ago. I think I've actually only MET her once in Boston in person at a Club Passim gig (maybe more times?), but as a "virtual friend" she's one of my oldest. She founded an internet newsgroup called Indiegrrl, which was very helpful when I was first starting out as a singer-songwriter, it still exists on Yahoogroups. I threw her an online baby shower when she had her little boy. And she's always been an email away for good advice.
She picked up the guitar late in life and taught herself to play better
than a lot of players I know. She has an amazing singing voice. Of her 3 albums, her last one Gifts and Burdens, is my favourite.
About a year ago she came down with an illness that started affecting her to the point that it was too painful to play guitar and she completely lost her voice.
I CAN NOT IMAGINE LOSING MY VOICE and any singer, even if you sing your kids to sleep at night, can probably identify with me. She then went on some meds and her abilities returned! However, the longterm affects of the meds are making her ill as well, so she's going off them, and will again lose her voice and guitar playing will be painful.
SO - she is raising funds to finish 3 records before all this happens via Kickstarter. It's tiered, so you get stuff with each amount of donation. But the minimum is $1 and every dollar helps her get to her goal.

June Pick Announced!
Hello friends,
Welcome to another month of goodness. We're in our 11th month of this charity experiment, and while I truly hope we all give a little each month to the Dig Deep pick, I also hope that I'm bringing awareness to you about charities and causes around the world-- As a group we are doing a world of good, THANK YOU!
June Pick - Dig Deep [A Charity Experiment]
As a former teacher, I've always been very aware of how autism affects children as well as entire families. When my husband's best friend's boy was diagnosed, well, it brought it a little closer to home. His amazing wife has brought a lot more to my attention over the years about how autism affects so many lives. Her friend Lisa is raising money to purchase iPhones and a specific application called Grace, that gives children with autism or developmental speech delay a way to communicate exactly what they want. She will then donate these phones to Autism Groups and Schools across Ireland.
Read more about her campaign for Irish Autism Action and DONATE HERE
Minimum donation is 2euro - and remember, EVERY DONATION MAKES A DIFFERENCE especially, if we as a group pull together and give even a little bit.
If you want to know more about Irish Autism Action:

Thanks again for donating and making Dig Deep work - It Starts With You.
XOXO

May 2010 Pick Announced!
Hello all!
Thank you so much for continuing to be a part of Dig Deep!
This month's pick is OneFamily.ie. An organization that helps single-parent families in Ireland. I learned of this through a friend who gained so much from this organization when she was at the lowest point in her life. One Family helped her get to the amazing place she is now and continues to help her and her child. They do incredible things for so many families. Every bit of support they get, no matter how small, helps!
One Family aims to provide high-quality, much-needed services to the many different one-parent families in Ireland and the professionals working with them. They also work hard to ensure that one-parent families have a clear voice that is heard by policy and decision-makers.
Visit them on the web here:

Or go directly here to donate:

To mark the International Day of Family, they are doing a fundraiser on May 15th, called Big Night In....check it out

The point of Dig Deep is, that as a group, we can change lives. I never actually know if anyone is giving to my charity picks, and I do hope that at the very least, I'm helping to bring awareness to you all about organizations that you may not have heard of before. But this only works if we all take 5 minutes and donate, even if it's a Dollar or a Euro - there are over 250 of us, that's a lot of money! No donation is too small.
Please keep the suggestions for future picks coming in - I am looking for small charities where the donations actually go directly to those in need (rather than to overhead/PR/etc). They also need to have web presence and the ability to donate online.
Please suggest Dig Deep [A Charity Experiment] to your Facebook friends.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and taking part in this experiment - it starts with YOU.

April 2010 Announced
First of all, welcome to all the new members! This group is slowly growing and I know we are absolutely making a difference!
This month's Dig Deep [A Charity Experiment] pick was suggested to me by a member of our group a while back and I'm finally getting to it. It's a very small charity that was founded by a 16 year old kid named Jordan Thomas while still in the hospital recovering from the accidental loss of both legs below the knee. Jordan’s foundation provides prosthetics for children with limb loss and partners with them through their growth years until the age of 18.
The average cost of one prosthetic leg is $10,000 and a prosthetic arm averages $15,000. The foundation estimates that it will need reserves of approximately $80-100,000 for each child. There are three recipients to date, and a fourth recipient has been chosen. The foundation, through Jordan’s family and volunteers has raised over $400,000 to date. More information about Jordan, his foundation, and his recipients may be found on this website:
JordanThomasFoundation.org
or go directly to DONATE HERE
So let's make a difference in the life of their next beneficiary and give whatever we can afford this month! We are over 250 members strong -if we each gave $2, $5, $10 it adds up!! No donation is considered too small, we add up to a lot together!
It has been difficult for me to find small charities with super low overhead, so all of your suggestions are helpful, please keep them coming!
Happy Spring to you all....I'm grateful you've joined me for this
experiment and know we are changing lives!
XOXO
